Wooden Shjips

30 March, 2010

I been loving them for more than a year and I think it’s about time to dedicate them a blog post.

Wooden Shjips music can be describe as dense, repeatitive, psychedelic rock with long songs and lots of personality. Influenced by Spacemen 3, The Velvet Underground and other sonic monsters of the like.

Watch below Motorbike, a great song included in their second album named “Dos”.

Indeed, check “Dos” album out on Southern Lord records, is fantastic. One of my favorites of 2009.

Top Songs of 2009

14 January, 2010

I’ll make an exception and I’ll choose more than the usual 12 songs, this year has been so exceptional that 12 songs are not enough to fill it. Some songs are new, others are old, in my opinion publication year does not matter, what matters is the music, and the meaning in your life.

Songs: Ohia – I’ve Been Riding with the Ghost.

For All the Bad.

Bonnie Prince Billy – Nomadic Revery (All Around).

For the darkness.

Herman Düne – I Wish that I Could See You Soon.

For the sunlight, and the hope.

Fleet Foxes – Mykonos.

For the epic, and the protection.

Dirty Projectors – Cannibal Resource.

For the weirdness, and the summer.

Joanna Newsom  – Emily.

For the quietness.

Magnolia Electric Co. – The Dark Don’t Hide It.

For the rage.

Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes.

For happiness!

Shellac – Steady as She Goes.

For the energy.

watch (instrumental version, differs a little bit from the one on Excellent Italian Greyhound)

Nina Simone – Sinnerman.

For the glory.

Moderat – Rusty Nails.

For Berlin.

Wooden Shjips – For So Long.

For the psyche.

Bonnie Prince Billy – Easy Does It.

For lovely mornings.

Mastodon – Oblivion.

For the relentlesness.

Love – Alone Again or.

For you.

That’s it, I hope you liked it.

Best albums of 2009

23 December, 2009

As every year, but with the main difference that this year I’m doing it on time, this is the post that covers my list of favorite albums for 2009. Most of them have been released this year, but this is not compulsory. My year in music has been quite interesting, good discovering, mostly music that came from the North American folk scene and sub-genres like New Weird America and other acoustic bastard sons. My biggest disapointment came from the neo-psychedelic scene, many bands (Weird Owl, Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound to name a couple) have new albums but way way less interesting than their previous releases. One exception to this is the magnificent album called “Dos” from Wooden Shjips which of course is on the list. Also not too much metal or doom this year, just Orthodox and Earth.

So, the albums, I choose twelve, one for every month, order has no meaning. Enjoy.

Extra Life – Secular Works

Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes

Songs: Ohia – The Magnolia Eletric Co.

Earth – The Bees Made Honey in he Lion’s Skull

Wooden Shjips – Dos

Shellac – Excelent Italian Greyhound
